For many in our community, the Joplin Family YMCA’s Day Camp means a safe, nurturing place for kids to spend the day while on summer break, but for families who rely on the Free and Reduced Lunch program, Day Camp is much more than that.
Our day camps participate in the Summer Food Service Program, which provides a free breakfast, lunch, and snack to day camp attendees at no extra cost to their parents. This reduces financial stress on families who might otherwise struggle to provide the meals at home that their children normally enjoy at school, making summer break even sweeter.
Heritage Youth Development Center currently has four open spots for infants and seven openings in the two-year-old classroom!
The YMCA Heritage Youth Development Center focuses on providing a nurturing, stimulating and positive first-school experience. Located in Webb City, Heritage has a fresh, caring atmosphere and offers a well-structured classroom setting. Plus, it's the YMCA, so financial aid, state aid, and scholarship assistance is available.
Heritage provides full child care between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday, all year long, and has been recognized for excellence by the Walton Family Foundation for the past two years. Registration for Joplin Family YMCA's Summer Adventure Day Camp opens on March 18. Enrollment must be completed at the Downtown YMCA. However, enrollment packets are available at either facility, or they can be downloaded from the Day Camp page of our website.

When the Cerebral Palsy of Tri-County Missouri’s Webb City Development Center ran into a transportation crisis, help came from an unexpected source. The Joplin Family YMCA, another Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas United Way agency, offered a Day Camp van that wouldn’t be needed until summer.
The Cerebral Palsy Center provides therapies at their Webb City Development Center to children with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, muscular dystrophy, congenital birth defects, and other diagnoses in the Joplin Metro Area. One of the key services they provide is transportation, as many families cannot access available therapies due to an inability to transport their children to the Center.
“The children riding the Joplin bus have a variety of developmental delays caused by autism, epilepsy, physical abnormality and Down’s syndrome.” said Christy Graham, Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy of Tri-County Webb City Development Center. “The loan of the Joplin Family YMCA Camp van has allowed nine children to receive consistent services during this time of crisis.”
The van, which is one of two donated by General Motors after the Joplin tornado, has a history of helping out in times of need. In May of 2011, it was used to transport children during the YMCA’s childcare relief initiative, Children of the Storm. This initiative offered free childcare to over 1,000 children in the community so that families could get back on their feet or assist in the relief effort.
“It is just our way of helping one of our United Way partner agencies meet the needs of our community,” said Cookie Estrada, CEO of the Joplin Family YMCA. “Joplin is a community that works together to help our neighbors, and we are happy to have the opportunity to support the CP Center and the good work they do.”
Joplin Family YMCA has received a grant of $500 from the Road Runners Club of America to support its Kids Run the Nation Program. This program was initiated in response to concerns for the health of children in our community. Kids Run the Nation is a locally managed, youth running program taught by a certified running coach. Our program will be implemented as a component of our Summer Day Camp. The grant will cover the cost of hydration supplies and participant awards.
The Joplin Family YMCA is pleased to announce that we are one of 285 Ys nationwide to receive a $5,000 jcpenney Access Grant. This funding is designed to support working families in need of affordable afterschool care for children ages 5 - 12.
jcpenney and the Y realize the important role safe, supervised afterschool care plays in providing children with positive alternatives to at-risk behavior. Our School Plus afterschool program offers homework support, a healthy snack, and an active environment steeped in the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. School Plus serves 500 children in our community, and is conveniently offered on-site at elementary schools in Joplin, Carl Junction and Webb City. School Plus is also offered at our Heritage Youth Development Center.

Through the generous support of Missouri Foundation for Health, the Joplin Family YMCA has partnered with Joplin Community Clinic and Mercy Hospital in a three-year program to improve access to health care for the uninsured and increase the health literacy of patients with Type II Diabetes.
The Y has opened its Downtown facility to Joplin Community Clinic to hold its weight-management classes for Diabetes patients. In addition, the Y is providing instructors to facilitate a fitness component to help patients coping with obesity and Type II Diabetes become active and make long-term lifestyle changes that improve health and quality of life.
