My life before was sitting at a computer on the couch. I was overweight, and my physical health was dominated by pain, medicine and limited mobility. Physically, mentally and emotionally, the weight gain had defeated me.
I also had a lot of medical issues, including lupus, heart problems, neuropathy and RA, and I’d had numerous surgeries and injuries that had limited my ability to do much of anything. I took medications to help my conditions, but they caused one pitfall after another, causing more harm than good.
Then I started having a recurring dream that I had died and my brothers were my pallbearers. They commented on how heavy I was as they were carrying me, and I would wake up thinking “I need to do something about this weight… soon.”
I had let all my conditions limit me, but I wanted to get better, so I decided to make a lifestyle change and signed up for the Weight Loss Challenge. I made a goal for myself and started being more aware of what I was eating. I found classes that would help me with mobility and strength training.
It was a lot of hard work, but I felt so much better each day. Each barrier I had put in front of my well-being was removed as I gained more strength and lost more weight. I felt great, and it made me want to get up each morning and head to the gym.
After 12 weeks of the Challenge, I lost 33 pounds. I am totally off all medications, and I have better mobility than I have had in 8 years. I am able climb stairs, walk better and even participate in Zumba! For the first time in a very long time, I feel great.
Every venture has to have a start. Let today be that start. Try something—anything. You never what God has in store for you.
